Background of the Study
Social media engagement has reshaped language use, and vlog narratives have emerged as a popular form of self-expression among Nigerian youth. In Ibadan, vloggers document personal experiences and social commentary, often employing innovative syntactic constructions that diverge from formal language norms. This study examines how high levels of social media engagement influence syntactic patterns in vlog narratives. Vloggers often simplify or modify sentence structures to enhance relatability and immediacy, reflecting both global digital trends and local linguistic practices (Obiora, 2023). The research will analyze a corpus of vlogs from Ibadan, focusing on aspects such as sentence complexity, clause reduction, and the use of conversational markers. These syntactic innovations not only mirror the digital medium’s demands for brevity but also contribute to evolving language standards among urban youth. By understanding these patterns, the study aims to shed light on the broader impact of social media on language change and to provide insights for educators and media professionals adapting to these trends (Obiora, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although vlogs are increasingly influential in shaping contemporary language, little is known about how social media engagement specifically affects syntax in Nigerian vlog narratives. Existing research tends to focus on visual content or general language trends, without a detailed analysis of syntactic changes. This gap restricts our understanding of how digital interactions transform language structures, potentially influencing communication effectiveness and cultural identity. Addressing this issue is essential for developing educational approaches that accommodate new syntactic norms emerging from digital media (Obiora, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze syntactic features in Ibadan vlog narratives.
To assess the influence of social media engagement on these syntactic structures.
To explore implications for language evolution and education.
Research Questions
What syntactic patterns are evident in Ibadan vlog narratives?
How does social media engagement affect these patterns?
What are the broader implications for contemporary Nigerian syntax?
Significance of the Study
This study provides critical insights into the interplay between digital media and language, highlighting how social media engagement transforms syntactic practices in Nigerian vlog narratives. The findings will inform educators, linguists, and media professionals on adapting to new language trends (Obiora, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to vlog narratives from Ibadan and does not consider other forms of digital media.
